CAMP COOL

Camp Cool’s Mission is to provide an Environment for Children with Disabilities so they can interact with their peers, participate in fun STEAM Activities (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics), experience life away from their usual day-to-day events, and be challenged to step outside of their comfort zone.

ATRC’s first Camp Cool was held in 2003, now having hundreds of children participate over the years in Cool fun. Children can have a day camp experience while their parents are at ease, knowing that their kids are in a safe, barrier-free environment. Find event details below.

 

CHILDREN / CAMPERS

  • Ages 8-15With a variety of disabilities (ex: deaf/hard of hearing, blind/low vision, communication disorders, mobility-device users, intellectual disabilities)

  • Siblings and friends, ages 8-15, are invited if space is available

GROUP SIZE

 
  • Groups range in size from 5-7 children

  • Each group has two adult counselors

  • Children are welcome to be accompanied by their personal assistant

  • One-to-one may be provided by Camp Cool to children who may benefit

  • Groups include a blend of children with different disabilities

CAMP STAFF

 
  • A mix of ATRC staff and volunteers (a blend of college students and professionals)

  • All members undergo training related to the event and the potential needs of campers, as well as disability awareness training

ACCOMMODATIONS

  • Wheelchair accessible

  • Assistive technology offered

 

ACTIVITIES

  • Divided between technology and non-technology

  • Options available for different levels of challenge

CAMP COOL 2020

 
 

VOLUNTEER WANTED

 
  • Date: October 17 & 24, 2 Saturdays in a row (participants must attend both days)

  • Time: 8:30a.m. — 3:00p.m.

  • Place: Hanahauʻoli School (Makiki, Oʻahu)

  • Travel subsidy offered for a limited number of Neighbor Island participants

  • Food: Lunch and snacks provided

  • Fee: $20 placeholder (Suggested donation. Includes t-shirt and food on two Saturdays)

  • Priority registration deadline: Friday, September 18, 2020
